Originally, John McClane was based on Detective Joe Leland from Roderick Thorp’s bestseller Nothing Lasts Forever, which was published in 1979. [1] Frank Malone, a character from Walter Wager’s 1987 book 58 Minutes, inspired other portions of the story (adapted as Die Hard 2).

It is said in the fourth film that “there is no one else to do it,” and he would happily let someone else do it if there were.  While many “one man army” action heroes of the 1980s were able to survive on their own, the events of the movie really take a physical toll on McClane, with McClane seriously wounded at the finale of the film.

McClane uses a Beretta 92F as his primary weapon in the first Die Hard film. Despite the fact that the NYPD has never issued the Beretta 92 for duty usage, his service weapon in the next two films is a Beretta 92FS.
