Who are Jaq and Gus ?
Cinderella’s deuteragonists are Jaq and Gus. Cinderella’s mouse friends. Jaq is brave and quick-witted, leading the family mayhem. Gus is a slow-witted, gluttonous brute (hence his plump physique). Both Jaq and Gus can speak “Mouse Latin” and regularly twist words, even Cinderella’s name (which they mispronounce as “Cinderelly”).
Jaq is a thin brown mouse sporting an orange jacket, red turtleneck, red cap, and brown slippers. He leads Cinderella’s mouse pals well. Jaq was the only mouse bold enough to face Lucifer alone. Jaq considers Cinderella a mother or older sister, like the other mice. He is often spotted with Gus. Jaq is clever and fast.
Cinderella rescues mice from Lucifer the cat’s traps, dresses, and feeds them. They reciprocate numerous favors. Jaq plans tactics to dodge the cat, steal food, and assist Cinderella with her ball attire. Other mice follow him. Jaq has thin hair and speaks pidgin English.
Jaq rescues Gus from a cage in the film’s opening scene. Cinderella names him Octavius, or “Gus.”
Gus joins the mouse troop after hearing Jaq’s explanation. Gus is slow, but brave, and speaks even more broken English than Jaq, who calls him “Gus-Gus.” Jaq convinces Gus to help Cinderella, and they accidentally prank Anastasia. Lady Tremaine punishes Cinderella by giving her more chores, then invites her to the ball. Since Perla can sew, she sends them to acquire the trimming for Cinderella’s ball gown. They battle Lucifer in the dressing room while snatching Anastasia’s ribbon and Drizella’s jade jewels. Gus enjoys scissors despite Perla’s advice to “leave stitching to the ladies.” Jaq and the other mice shout “Surprise!” when Cinderella sees her finished gown, but Gus stutters and says “Happy Birthday!” Jaq and Gus watch from above as Cinderella shows her stepfamily her new gown, but when Lady Tremaine confronts her about the ball, they fear disaster. Jaq wants to fight Anastasia and Drizella when they notice their abandoned belongings and attack Cinderella, but he knows he’s no match for them. Jaq and Gus, along with two other mice, are converted into white horses by the Fairy Godmother when Cinderella’s dress is damaged by her stepsisters. Gus gets some retribution for almost being eaten by Lucifer when he neighs at the cat as a horse. They drag Cinderella’s coach, driven by Major and pushed by Bruno, to the castle for the ball. At midnight, the horses become mice again.
