Family Guy Cartoon
Seth MacFarlane developed Family Guy for Fox. The sitcom follows Peter and Lois Griffin, their children Meg, Chris, and Stewie, and their dog Brian. Much of the show’s comedy is metafictional cutaway jokes that ridicule American society. After The Life of Larry and Larry & Steve, MacFarlane created the family. Larry and Steve were renamed Peter and Brian by MacFarlane. In December 1998, Fox greenlit MacFarlane’s seven-minute pilot and filming started. Family Guy was canceled after its third season in 2002; one unaired episode aired on Adult Swim in 2003 to end its initial run. Favorable DVD sales and excellent ratings from repeats led Fox to resurrect the program in 2004; a fourth season began May 1, 2005.
Family Guy has been well-received since its debut. National Review Online’s Catherine Seipp called it “nasty but humorous.” The New York Times dubbed it an “outrageously sarcastic family” with “lots of comedy potential and parodies.” The Sydney Morning Herald called Family Guy a “pop culture-heavy masterpiece” on April 21, 2009. Nancy Franklin of The New Yorker praised Family Guy’s ribaldry and appeal. IGN said Family Guy has improved since its return. They can’t envision another half-hour program as funny as Family Guy. The series has earned 12 Emmys and 11 Annies. It was the first animated series nominated for the prize since The Flintstones in 1961. Family Guy was rated ninth by TV Guide in 2013. Characterization, cutaway humor, sexual material, violence, and scripting have all been criticized.
Many tie-in media have been released, including Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story, a 2005 DVD special; Family Guy: Live in Vegas, a 2005 soundtrack-DVD combo; a video game and pinball machine; six books published by Harper Adult; and Laugh It Up, Fuzzball: The Family Guy Trilogy (2010). The Cleveland Show aired from September 27, 2009, through May 19, 2013. Family Guy has 389 episodes by 2022. Fox revived the series on May 11, 2020. Fox announced the 21st season on September 23, 2020.
