Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec created the supernatural adolescent drama based on L. J. Smith’s novel series. The CW series broadcast 171 episodes over eight seasons, from September 10, 2009 to March 10, 2017. The pilot episode drew The CW’s greatest viewership of any series launch since 2006; the first season averaged 3.60 million viewers. It was the network’s most-watched show before Arrow. It’s won four People’s Choice Awards and countless Teen Choice Awards.
Nina Dobrev, who portrayed Elena Gilbert, announced her departure in April 2015. Dobrev returns for the seventh-season finale and series finale. The CW renewed the series for an eighth season in March 2016, but in July confirmed it would be the final. Final season aired from October 21, 2016 to March 10, 2017. The series’ themes and characters spawned numerous TV shows, online series, novels, and comic comics. This collection of related works began with The CW’s The Originals.
The series takes place in the magical town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), an adolescent whose parents died in a car accident, falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire called Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Stefan’s elder brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) reappears with a scheme to lure back their former love Katherine Pierce (also portrayed by Dobrev). Damon initially resents Stefan for forcing him to become a vampire, but he eventually reconciles and falls in love with Elena, forming a love triangle. Both brothers want to defend Elena from Katherine and other local criminals. Flashbacks show the brothers’ background and the town’s folklore. Elena’s brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) and aunt Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning), her best friends Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Caroline Forbes (Candice King), their mutual friends Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), Matt’s sister Vicki Donovan (Kayla Ewell), and their history teacher, vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman, also have storylines (Matthew Davis). The “Founders’ Council” oversees the town’s politics. They protect the town against vampires, werewolves, witches, hybrids, and ghosts.
