The Hunger Games Movie
Gary Ross directed this 2012 dystopian action picture based on Suzanne Collins’ 2008 book. It’s the first Hunger Games film and was produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik. Ross, Collins, and Billy Ray wrote the script. Lawrence, Hutcherson, Hemsworth, Harrelson, Banks, Kravitz, Tucci, and Sutherland star. A boy and a girl from each of Panem’s 12 Districts are selected yearly as “tributes” and forced to engage in the Hunger Games, televised combat to the death. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers to be her sister’s tribute. Katniss flies to the Capitol to prepare for the Hunger Games with Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson).
Lions Gate Entertainment co-produced The Hunger Games with Color Force, which had purchased the rights weeks previously. Because the book was written in first-person from Katniss’ perspective, the authors expanded Seneca Crane to depict narrative events Katniss isn’t there for. Ross also included sequences between Crane and Coriolanus Snow. Casting took place from March through May 2011. Filming took place in North Carolina from May to September 2011.
The film was released on March 21, 2012, in certain European countries and in the US and UK on March 23, 2012. The film’s opening day ($67.3 million) and opening weekend for non-sequel established records. The film has the third-highest opening weekend gross in North America ($152.5 million). It’s the first picture since Avatar to win four straight weekends in North America. The film grossed over $694 million worldwide on a $78 million budget, making it the third-highest-grossing picture in the U.S. and the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2012. 18 August 2012 DVD and Blu-ray release. Catching Fire was published in the US on November 22, 2013.
Critics praised The Hunger Games’ ideas and messages, as well as Lawrence’s depiction of Katniss and performance. Some criticized the film’s dependence on shaky cam, notably in the action moments, and its parallels to previous works. “Safe & Sound” earned a Grammy Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Lawrence received the Saturn Award for Best Actress, the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress in an Action Movie, and the Empire Award for Best Actress.
