The Death Cure is a 2018 American dystopian science fiction film directed by Wes Ball and written by T.S. Nowlin, based on James Dashner’s 2011 book The Death Cure.
20th Century Fox was supposed to release Maze Runner: The Death Cure on February 17, 2017, but postponed it until January 26, 2018, to give O’Brien time to heal from filming injuries. Critics praised the characters, action scenes, and visual effects but criticized the plot and character development. The picture made $288 million globally. Thomas, Newt, and Frypan are the last free “Gladers” resistant to the Flare virus. They and the Right Arm resistance rescue Immunes from a WCKD-operated train carriage. Minho, their final Glader comrade, was on a separate carriage of the train bound to WCKD’s headquarters of operations, the “Last City.” Against Vince’s instructions, the three leave camp to rescue Minho, who is being tortured by WCKD to find a viral cure. Infected Cranks assault the gang as they go towards the Last City. Jorge and Brenda rescue them.
The gang reaches the Last City’s Crank-proof wall. Outside the wall, people rally to enter the city. When WCKD fires on demonstrators, a gas-mask-wearing team takes them to a hideaway. Gally, who survived Minho’s assault, is a member. Lawrence, a rebel commander outside the walls who rescued and nursed Gally back to health, lets Thomas, Newt, and Gally enter the Last City via a hidden passage. Gally guides Thomas and Newt into the city and promises Thomas he can get them inside WCKD HQ. Newt tells Thomas he’s ill. Thomas and Gally grab Teresa to heal him.

Teresa says to Thomas that his blood can rescue Newt if he returns to WCKD. Newt recovers from the Flare, assaults Thomas, and asks him to murder him. Thomas refuses, so Newt stabs himself in the chest. Thomas visits WCKD and confronts Paige. While she chats to him, Janson murders her and sedates Thomas. Thomas awakens in a facility. Teresa removes his blood. She hears that Janson simply wants to heal himself and deserving people. Teresa assaults Janson, who fights with Thomas. Thomas unleashes two Cranks to murder Janson. Thomas and Teresa escape the fire on the roof. The crew lands on a berg. Thomas jumps on, but Teresa dies when the platform collapses.
The troop rejoins the Immunes and the Right Arm and flees to a safe shelter. Thomas finds a letter in Newt’s necklace. Still saddened by his friends’ murders, he reads Newt’s message before thanking Thomas for being his buddy.
