Dungeons’ Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D or DnD) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) initially conceived by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. It was initially published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc. (TSR). It’s been published by Wizards of the Coast (now a division of Hasbro) since 1997. The game was created from miniature wargames, with a variant of the 1971 game Chainmail serving as the basic rule system. D&D’s release is considered the beginning of contemporary role-playing games and the role-playing game business. D&D differs from typical wargaming by enabling players to design their own characters instead of a military structure. These characters have fictional adventures in a fantastical environment. A Dungeon Master (DM) acts as the game’s referee and storyteller, maintaining the environment in which the adventures occur and playing the role of the game world’s residents. The characters form a group and interact with the setting’s people and each other. Together, they solve problems, fight in battles, explore, and acquire riches and wisdom. In the process, the characters acquire experience points (XP) to grow in levels and become more powerful throughout a number of play sessions.
The early popularity of D&D led to a profusion of similar gaming systems. Despite the competition, D&D has maintained the market leader in role-playing games. In 1977, the game was separated into two branches: the comparatively rules-light basic Dungeons & Dragons and the highly organized, rules-heavy Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (abbreviated as AD&D). AD&D 2nd Edition was released in 1989. In 2000, the D&D 3rd edition continued the edition numbering from AD&D; a revised version 3.5 was published in June 2003. These 3rd edition rules were the foundation of the d20 System, which is licensed under the Open Game License (OGL) for use by other publishers. D&D 4th edition was published in June 2008. The 5th edition of D&D was published in the second part of 2014.
In 2004, D&D remained the best-known and best-selling role-playing game in the US, with 20 million players and more than $1 billion in book and equipment sales worldwide. 2017 had “the most gamers in its history—12 million to 15 million in North America alone”. D&D 5th edition sales “were up 41% in 2017 from the year before, then soared another 52% in 2018, the game’s best sales year ever.” The game contains various pre-made adventures and commercial campaign settings for regular gaming groups. D&D is renowned outside the game itself for various D&D-branded items, allusions to popular culture, and some of the issues that have surrounded it, including a moral panic in the 1980s wrongly associating it with Satanism and suicide. The game has received several accolades and has been translated into many languages.
