What gives rise to the dancing skeleton?

The Skeleton Dance began in mid-1928 when Walt Disney was on his way to New York to negotiate a distribution contract for his new Mickey Mouse cartoons and to record the soundtrack for his first sound animation, Steamboat Willie. During a layover in Kansas City, Disney paid a visit to an old friend Carl Stalling, who was then an organist at the Isis Theatre and asked him to create soundtracks for his first two Mickey films, Plane Crazy and The Gallopin’ Gaucho.

While there, Stalling submitted a series of “musical novelty” films mixing music and animation to Disney, which became the foundation for the Silly Symphony series, as well as a concept about skeletons dancing in a cemetery. Stalling would later become a staff composer at Disney.
