Plot summary

Following the death of their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric seek to resurrect her using the prohibited science of human alchemy. However, alchemy functions on the principle of comparable exchange, and breaching the human alchemy taboo comes at a high cost. Ed loses a limb, while Al loses his whole body. At the expense of his arm, Ed is able to trap Al’s soul within a massive suit of armor. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still stuck in the armor) depart their boyhood home, each worried about the happiness of the other. Ed, who has a natural knack and expertise for alchemy, gets nationally recognized and quickly becomes renowned as the “Fullmetal Alchemist.” Their ultimate goal is to find any information about the famous Philosopher’s Stone in the hopes that it may enable them to reclaim their previous bodies. All of their hopes are riding on this fabled stone, which may or may not exist at all. However, the brothers quickly discover that they are not the only ones seeking the powerful stone.
