This line is taken from Dante’s 1320 “Divine Comedy.”It implies giving up all hope. It is claimed to have been engraved near the gateway of hell. The statement also acts as a warning, comparable to advance with caution, “stay away”, or “do not enter”. It makes it plain to anyone entering a terrible situation or area that there is no way out or back. In other terms, it also suggests that a situation might be very hazardous, yet this statement is often employed in a comedic context.

The phrase is a translation of the Italian phrase “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate,” which was created by Alighieri Dante in his renowned epic Divine Comedy, which was composed between 1306 and 1321. There are other variations, but the one translated by H. F. Cary is provided here. The phrase appears in the last line of the second verse.
