Big Trouble in Little China is a 1986 American fantasy martial arts action-comedy film directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun, and James Hong. The narrative follows Jack Burton, who assists his buddy Wang Chi in rescuing Wang’s green-eyed fiancée from robbers in San Francisco’s Chinatown. They go to the strange underworld under Chinatown, where they meet an ancient sorcerer called David Lo Pan, who demands that a lady with green eyes marry him in order to break a centuries-old curse.

Although the initial screenplay by first-time screenwriters Gary Goldman and David Z. Weinstein was intended to be a Western set in the 1880s, screenwriter W. D. Richter was recruited to heavily revise and modernize the script. The company engaged Carpenter to helm the picture and pushed Big Trouble in Little China into production in order for it to be released before a similar themed Eddie Murphy feature, The Golden Child, which was scheduled to be released around the same time. Carpenter’s long-held goal to direct a martial arts picture was realized with this project.
