How It Began

In responding to the public’s lack of knowledge of Black people’s achievements, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915. In 1926, the association established “Negro History Week” to honor the contributions of African Americans to American history. Prior to the establishment of Negro History Week, few individuals studied Black history, and it was not included in textbooks.

This week was selected because it coincides with the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist (someone who advocated for the abolition of slavery), and former United States President Abraham Lincoln. During the Civil War, President Lincoln led the United States, which mostly fought for the slavery of Black people in the nation. The week following its inception, several schools and authorities started to recognize it.

Black History Month was established in 1976 by U.S. President Gerald Ford to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then, every February has been designated as Black History Month in the United States.

What It Respects

Black History Month was established to highlight the achievements of African Americans in the United States. It commemorates all Black people throughout American history, from the earliest enslaved individuals carried over from Africa in the early 17th century through African Americans living in the United States today.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who fought for equal rights for Blacks in the 1950s and 1960s; Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1967; Mae Jemison, the first female African-American astronaut to travel to space in 1992; and Barack Obama, who was elected the first African-American president of the United States in 2008.

Black History Month Today

Since the inaugural Negro History Week in 1926, other nations, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands, have joined the United States in recognizing Black people and their contributions to history and culture.

Today, Black History Month continues the conversation of Black people and their accomplishments via events such as museum exhibitions and film screenings, as well as through promoting the year-round study of African American achievements.
