Which Symbol Represents Breast Cancer Internationally?

The pink ribbon is a global symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons, and the color pink in general, associate the wearer or promoter with the breast cancer brand and indicate moral support for women with breast cancer. Pink ribbons are most typically seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Pink is considered feminine in current Western nations. It invokes typical feminine gender duties such as caring for others, being attractive, being kind, and cooperating.

The pink ribbon symbolizes the fortitude to combat breast cancer, optimism for the future, and the generous generosity of individuals and companies that openly support the breast cancer campaign. Its purpose is to unite ladies who are presently battling breast cancer.

Breast cancer groups utilize the pink ribbon to identify with breast cancer, raise awareness, and fundraise. Pink Ribbon International, for example, uses the pink ribbon as its principal emblem. The logo of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a stylized “running ribbon.”

While the pink ribbon especially represents breast cancer awareness, it is also a sign and proxy of friendliness toward women in general. Purchasing, wearing, exhibiting, or sponsoring pink ribbons shows that a person or company cares about women. The pink ribbon is a marketing brand for companies that enables them to sell themselves to women while also identifying themselves as socially conscious. Breast cancer awareness is politically safe in comparison to other women’s problems.

How Breast Cancer Awareness Began

Charlotte Haley, a breast cancer survivor, proposed the idea of a peach-colored breast cancer awareness ribbon. She wrote in the card  “The National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is 1.8 billion US dollars, and only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.”

Haley was completely grassroots, giving out cards at the local grocery and addressing letters to renowned ladies ranging from previous First Ladies to Dear Abby. Her message was spread by word of mouth. Thousands of these cards were delivered by Haley.

Alexandra Penney, editor-in-chief of Self magazine, was working on the 1992 National Breast Cancer Awareness Month edition when she saw Haley’s peach-colored ribbon. By collaborating with Haley, she saw the initiative to adapt to her concept. However, Haley declined the offer, claiming that Self’s endeavor was too commercial.

Due to legal issues, Self magazine and others interested in promoting breast cancer awareness using a ribbon as a symbol opted to choose pink.
