Until 1999, the club was a structural entity of the National League, representing the Eastern Division. The team was created in 1883, and its headquarters are still in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This is the only franchise that has never changed its name or location. Al Reach and John Rogers were the original owners. Rogers was the team’s only owner beginning in 1899 and stayed so until 1903. The Philadelphia Phillies then sold it to James Potter, who sold it two years later to Bill Shettsline. However, he was only the owner for roughly four years.
