The Nine Alignments

The roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons introduced the world to an ethical system known today as the nine alignments in 1977, admittedly before I was born. After a quarter-century, millions of people have been exposed to this system. I was introduced to D&D in fourth grade, and I still understand the world in this way twenty years later. For many of us, with no formal training in philosophy, this is the first time we’ve had a clear understanding of ethics. This does not bother me.

The nine-alignment system provides a two-dimensional view of human behavior and motivation. One of the axes is Chaos versus Law. The other is Good vs. Evil. My goal here is to look at each of the nine alignments, but mostly to look at the axes themselves. I’ll look at what they mean not just in terms of how we play characters in games, but also how we understand those acting in the real world.

Based on these two axes, the nine alignments are as follows: Chaotic Good, Neutral Good, Lawful Good, Chaotic Neutral, True Neutral, Lawful Neutral, Chaotic Evil, Neutral Evil, and Lawful Evil.
