Halloween Began As A Commemoration Of The Dead

Unsurprisingly, our modern and enjoyable Halloween traditions have darker origins. On November 1st, 2,000 years ago, the ancient Celts celebrated Samhain. This festival honored the dead, but those who attended made certain that wandering spirits were kept at bay by participating in certain rituals. The barrier between the living and the dead was thought to have weakened on October 31st, allowing the dead to return.

On the eve of Samhain, people placed food and wine outside their homes to ward off ghosts. The ancients would also wear masks during the day to fool spirits into thinking they were fellow ghosts rather than living people.

In the eighth century, the Christian church adopted Samhain and renamed it All Saints’ Day, with All Hallows’ Eve celebrated the night before, giving rise to our modern term “Halloween.”
