When did Philadelphians begin to climb poles?

Philly’s history with greased-pole climbing stretches back to the 1960s, with the establishment of the South 9th Street Italian Market Festival. According to festival organizer Michele Gambino, a long-standing tradition of the event challenges groups to work together to climb a lard-covered pole to get meats and cheeses at the summit.

To the best of her knowledge, none of the Italian Market Festival pole climbers are celebrating Philly sports successes, according to Gambino.

“Those aren’t greased pole climbers; they’re simply supporters who want to go to the top, wave a flag, and take their shirts off,” she said. “It’s very appropriate for how we celebrate, how we go to extremes, and the kind of fan following we have.” It’s as though they’re thinking, ‘The pole is there, why not go up?'”
