What do you know about Muthafucka?
Approximately in the 1950s. For more than a century, people have been calling each other motherfuckers, but up to World War II, the phrase was primarily insulting. The Oxford English Dictionary’s earliest references to motherfucker and motherfucking are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and they provide insight into how serious people at the time used the term. The Texas Court of Appeals’ report of the 1889 trial of Levy v. State, where witnesses recount how a defendant was dubbed a “God damned mother-f—king, bastardly son-of-a-bitch,” is where the term is first found in the OED. The fact that mother-fucking is the only one of the four expletives to be prohibited is possibly telling.
Just a few years later, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals evidently felt more at ease writing the phrase. In one of their documents from 1898, the phrase is virtually provided as justification for murder: A defendant claims that the fact that the victim called him a “mother-fucking son-of-a-bitch” should partly absolve him of the murder charge. The first use of the noun motherfucker (instead of motherfucking) mentions a guy who received a different kind of punishment for using the term: A black soldier was court-martialed and sentenced to 10 years of hard labor after writing a defiant letter to his draft board in which he referred to them as “low-down Mother Fuckers.”
