Pumpkins Were Not Always Used to Make Jack-o-Lanterns

In traditional English, the term “Jack-o-Lantern” translates to “fool of the fire.” Carving out Jack-o-Lanterns began around 300 years ago in Ireland.

However, Jack-o-Lanterns were not always made of pumpkins. They were traditionally carved from turnips and other root vegetables by the Irish.

According to Irish folklore, Jack-o-Lanterns were named after a man named… Jack, you guessed it! But this wasn’t any ordinary guy. This Jack was a man who had deceived the Devil so many times that he was barred from both Heaven and Hell. Instead, Jack was forced to wander Earth until the end of time. And he’d wave a lantern and fool anyone who got in his way.

We can still carve pumpkins in honor of this ancient Irish tradition. However, carving vegetables was not invented by the Irish. Several hundred years ago, Maori tribes would carve out vegetables as well. But we can still thank the Gaelic and Celtic tribes of centuries ago for making carving what it is today.
