Have you ever heard “It’s A Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door”?
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off too.”This is a quotation from J.R.R.Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship of the Ring, specifically Chapter 3 “Three Is Company.” Frodo has left Bag End and is on his way to his new home in Buckland in this chapter. Merry is in the new home in Buckland, preparing everything, while Sam and Pippin follow him on this expedition.
The three of them had paused for lunch, and Sam wonders whether there are Elves in the woods. Pippin answers in the negative, and Frodo responds with a Road-related poem that ‘pops into his brain.’ Pippin inquires if it is one of Bilbo’s rhymes, and they discuss Bilbo and what he used to say, mostly concerning the Road.
Frodo recounts in the same section of the book (really, the same line) that Bilbo used to claim there was only one Road, and it was like a river. This river was nourished by every road that led from every entrance. The road that starts at Bag End goes to the Lonely Mountain and might take you much farther.
To me, the statement simply states that everything is possible. You can go anywhere you choose. You never know where you’ll wind up if you don’t take that initial step. And travel may be seductive; you might get swept up in it and simply keep going. And, yeah, things can go wrong, and horrible things can happen. But how will you know if you don’t take that risk? To stay on your feet, maintain your wits and common sense at the ready.
Keep in mind the perils that await you beyond your door. Going Out Your Door Coir Doormat helps keep your house safe and secure.
