The Rainbow Flag: How Did It Become a Symbol of LGBTQ Pride?

In commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, which took place in New York City in June 1969, the month of June has been officially designated as LGBTQ Pride Month for a very long time. During June, also known as Pride Month, it is not unusual to see the rainbow flag, which serves as a symbol for the LGBTQ rights movement, being proudly displayed. But how did the flag come to represent LGBTQ pride in the first place?

It was initially developed in 1978 by the artist Gilbert Baker, who was both openly homosexual and a drag queen. He is credited with creating the first rainbow flag. Baker subsequently disclosed that he was encouraged to construct a symbol of pride for the LGBT community by Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay political politicians in the United States. Milk was a pioneer in the fight for gay rights. Baker came to the conclusion that flags are the most effective symbols of pride, thus he made the decision to make that emblem a flag. In a subsequent interview, he expressed his views on the subject as follows: “Our task as homosexual people was to come out, to be visible, to live in the truth, and as I say, to get out of the lie.” Because a flag is a manner of asserting your visibility or of stating, “This is who I am!”, it was the perfect tool for accomplishing that purpose. Baker saw the rainbow to be a natural flag that fell from the sky, and as a result, he chose eight different colors for the flag’s stripes, each of which has its own significance (hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit).

At a march celebrating gay liberation in San Francisco on June 25, 1978, the first variants of the rainbow flag were flown for the first time. Baker and a group of volunteers had previously crafted the flags by hand; now, however, Baker wanted to mass-produce the flag so that it could be used by everyone. However, in order to resolve manufacturing concerns, the pink and turquoise stripes were eliminated, and the indigo color was changed to standard blue. This led to the creation of the current flag with six stripes (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet). The rainbow flag is most often seen today in this configuration, which places the red stripe at the top of the flag, similar to the way a genuine rainbow appears. The many hues eventually evolved to symbolize not just the vast variety but also the sense of camaraderie that exists among the LGBTQ subculture.

It wasn’t until 1994 that the rainbow flag became universally recognized as the banner of pride for LGBTQ people. In order to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Baker created a replica that was one mile long. The rainbow flag is now an internationally recognized symbol of LGBTQ pride and can be seen flying proudly over cities, towns, and countries all over the globe, whether the times are bright and hopeful or dark and challenging.

Concluding

When it comes to demonstrating love and support for the LGBT+ community, there have been a number of calls for action made recently. Increasing the amount of “LGBT+ merch” is no longer considered a new move but rather a necessary one to do. With more designs like this starting to spread (and other kinds of the merchandise being created), this effort will hopefully achieve its ultimate goal of making the world a better and safer place for all members of our community. There is plenty of support in the community for LGBT+ people, and with more designs starting to spread like these (and other kinds of the merchandise being created), this commercial will hopefully succeed.
