Cats in Black
In addition to witches and ghouls, black cats are another Halloween symbol. Black cats were formerly linked with beneficent gods, but during the inquisition they were stigmatized as malevolent and demonic. In addition, the color black has long been associated with the night and with evil. The black cat was associated with ill luck and disaster in the Middle Ages when the cat was associated with witches.
Crossbones with a Skull
A skull with crossbones on a signboard symbolizes a warning of danger, death, and sickness. The skull serves as a container for the transformation process, while the bones are a reminder of the end of life. In this way, the skull and crossbones represent poison and peril to seafarers as a whole. Skeletons, too, are linked with the spirits who descend to Earth during Halloween, as do ghosts.
Owls
As with bats and witches, owls are also nocturnal creatures. It wasn’t too long ago that the Underworld and the goddesses were all associated with owls. Later, they were linked to dark magic and are said to feed on the souls of the dead as part of Halloween spookiness.
