NBA Facts You May Not Have Known
We NBA fans are constantly eager for NBA information. I’m sure some of you have every year’s champion memorized from the previous to today. In other cases, I’m sure some individuals know their beloved team’s history from start to finish.
Providence, Rhode Island Once Had A Team
The Basketball Association of America was founded in 1946, and one of the teams was named the Providence Steamrollers. This team played three seasons and finished with a record of 46-122.
I can’t say I’m shocked. With a name like the Steamrollers, I guess it would be difficult to recruit skilled players.
Toronto’s First Basketball Team Wasn’t The Raptors
Believe it or not, the Raptors and then-Vancouver Grizzlies were not the first NBA teams to play north of the border. That title goes to the Toronto Huskies, one of the league’s first teams.
However, at the time, Canada proved to be a difficult basketball market, as the Huskies only lasted one season, finishing 22-38 and missing the playoffs.
A First-Round Pick Was Muggsy Bogues
Muggsy Bogues is the NBA’s shortest player, standing at 5’3″. He was a first-round selection despite averaging just 8.3 points and 6.6 assists in four years at Wake Forest.
One would be mistaken, as the Washington Bullets picked the small point guard with the 12th overall choice in the 1987 draft. He would go on to enjoy a 14-year career, establishing himself as a defensive menace and competent thrower. In terms of scoring, he only averaged 10-plus points three times.
Despite this, he became a folk hero due to his height, and he continues to have many supporters to this day.
Throughout His Career, Robert Parish Averaged Less Than 20 Points A Game
Robert Parish is without a doubt one of the best centers to ever play the game. During his 21-year career, he earned four championship rings (three with the Boston Celtics, one with the Chicago Bulls) and appeared in nine All-Star games.
Having been a part of the dominating Celtics teams of the 1980s, one would believe his stats were out of this world. Rather, Parish was not a dominating scoring center. In fact, he averaged more than 18 points five times.
Given that, Parish concluded his career with a fairly…well, average lifetime average of 14.5 points a game.
Chris Webber Never Played A Single Game For The Team That Drafted Him
Chris Webber, a member of the University of Michigan’s “Fab Five,” was an absolute star on the court. In two years with the Wolverines, he averaged 17.4 points and 10 rebounds a game.
The Orlando Magic selected him with the first overall choice in the 1993 NBA draft and promptly traded him to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway. Few people realize that the Warriors did not pick the eventual Hall of Famer.
