The film is presented in vignettes, with adult Ralphie Parker narrating about one Christmas when he was nine. Ralphie requested a Red Ryder 200-shot Carbine Action Range Model air gun for Christmas. Ralphie’s mother, instructor Miss Shields, and a Santa Claus at Higbee’s all warn him, “You’ll shoot your eye out.”
Ralphie gets several gifts on Christmas morning, but not the firearm. Ralphie’s father (“The Old Man”) takes him to a secret box in the corner that contains the firearm.
