Aladdin (Disney Character)
Aladdin is a 1992 animated musical fantasy comedy film published by Walt Disney Pictures and produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation. The film was the fourth created under the Disney Renaissance and is the 31st Disney animated feature picture. Ron Clements and John Musker produced and directed the film, which is based on the Arabic folktale of the same name from the One Thousand and One Nights. Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, and Douglas Seale are among the voice actors. The story follows Aladdin, an Arabian street urchin who discovers a magical lamp with a genie within. In order to marry the Sultan’s free-spirited daughter, Princess Jasmine, he disguises himself as a rich prince and attempts to impress him.
The concept came from lyricist Howard Ashman, and the script went through three revisions before being approved by then-Disney Studios president Jeffrey Katzenberg. Computers were utilized to finalize the artwork and create certain animated components, and the animators based their ideas on the work of caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. Alan Menken composed the musical soundtrack, which includes six songs with lyrics penned by both Ashman and Sir Tim Rice, who took over when Ashman died. Aladdin was released on November 11, 1992, to critical and financial acclaim, and it went on to become the highest-grossing picture of the year, generating over $504 million worldwide. It was the first animated picture to hit the half-billion-dollar milestone upon its debut, and it remained the highest-grossing animated film of all time until The Lion King surpassed it (1994).
Aladdin won two Academy Awards and received several other awards for its soundtrack, which included the first and only song from a Disney picture to win a Grammy Award for Song of the Year, “A Whole New World,” performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. In the United States, the film’s home video VHS version established a sales record, grossing almost $500 million. Aladdin’s popularity spawned a slew of sequels, including two direct-to-video sequels, The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), as well as an animated television series and a Broadway version. Guy Ritchie directed a live-action picture adaptation, which was released on May 24, 2019.
