Who is Aladdin Jasmine Princess?
Princess Jasmine is a fictitious character in Disney’s Aladdin (1992). Jasmine, voiced by American actress Linda Larkin and Filipina singer Lea Salonga, is the Sultan’s daughter who’s tired of royal confines. Despite an age-old rule requiring the princess to marry a prince before her next birthday, Jasmine is determined to marry for who he is, not what he has. Ron Clements, John Musker, Ted Elliott, and Terry Rossio created Jasmine based on Badroulbadour from “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.”
Originally planned as a spoilt, materialistic princess, the authors transformed Jasmine into a stronger and more significant protagonist after removing Aladdin’s mother from the screenplay and stealing from Roman Holiday (1953). Larkin was almost sacked from the film a few months after landing the part because Disney chief Jeffrey Katzenberg didn’t like her voice. Clements and Musker convinced him differently. Lea Salonga was recruited as Jasmine’s singing voice based on her performance in Miss Saigon. This historic casting choice made Jasmine the first Disney Princess to have two distinct actresses give her speaking and singing voices. Mark Henn based Jasmine’s design on a theme park visitor, his sister, and Jennifer Connelly.
Unlike other Disney princesses, Jasmine plays the love interest in her own film. The character’s narrative has been compared negatively to Ariel from The Little Mermaid (1989) and Belle from Beauty and the Beast (1991), although she’s been lauded for her charm and chemistry with Aladdin. She is the franchise’s first non-European and West Asian princess. [3] In doing so, she introduced ethnic variety to Disney’s princess genre. Jasmine has appeared in Aladdin’s sequels The Return of Jafar (1994) and Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996), as well as its TV series and Broadway musical adaptation. Both Larkin and Salonga are Disney Legends for the role. Naomi Scott plays the role in the 2019 live-action remake.
