Aladdin The Genie Disney
In Walt Disney Pictures’ 31st animated feature film Aladdin, the Genie is a fictitious Jinn (1992). In the original picture, Robin Williams played him. After a contract dispute between Williams and the Walt Disney Company, Dan Castellaneta voiced the Genie in the direct-to-video feature The Return of Jafar, as well as the television series, before Williams returned for the final installment, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and the character’s own mini-series, Great Minds Think for Themselves.
Dan Castellaneta voiced the Genie in Aladdin: Nasira’s Revenge and subsequently in Square Enix and Disney Interactive Studios’ Kingdom Hearts series of video games, Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II (with archived audio used in other Kingdom Hearts games). In Disney Think Fast (2008) and Kinect Disneyland Adventures, Jim Meskimen takes up the role (2011). In the 2019 live-action adaptation of the 1992 film, Will Smith portrays a live-action version of the character.
The Genie acts as comedic relief in each of his appearances, as well as driving the storyline in the first film. He is revealed to have limitless shapeshifting skills, allowing for a wide range of visual jokes; nonetheless, he is unable to murder, make people fall in love, completely resurrect the dead, or grant further wishes. Genie’s superhuman skills allow him to breach the fourth wall and mock real-life individuals and pop culture well beyond the confines of his own realm. During the development of Aladdin, for example, Williams would spontaneously create several impersonations, and his animator Eric Goldberg would determine which ones would be transferred into the film. One of these was the Genie’s head-turning like Pinocchio’s due to an imitation of Pinocchio’s nose sprouting. The Genie was envisioned by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman as “a hip Harlem jazz vocalist, like Fats Waller or Cab Calloway.” Menken was concerned that Williams would be unable to demonstrate the requisite vocal qualities, but he changed his mind after seeing Williams perform “Friend Like Me” and “Prince Ali” at his Los Angeles home.
