Animal House was written by Chris Miller, Harold Ramis, and Doug Kenney of National Lampoon magazine. Among their other early casting choices that Ramis would have rejected were SNL vets Dan Aykroyd as biker D-Day and Bill Murray as Boon.

The film was a surprise hit, generating $141 million on a $3 million budget, a record for a comedy at the time. Who didn’t make a fortune from the film? Donald Sutherland portrayed a laid-back professor. Producers offered him a $75,000 payment in exchange for a part of the film’s profits. He expected the film to fail, so he accepted the 75 grand. Sutherland would have earned almost $4 million if he had believed in the project.
