April 20
420, 4:20, or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) is slang for marijuana and hashish use in the cannabis community, particularly smoking around 4:20 p.m. (16:20 UTC). It also refers to events centered on cannabis that are held on April 20 (known as 4/20 in the United States). On April 20, cannabis businesses often offer discounts on their goods in states where the drug is permitted.
In 1971, five high school kids in San Rafael, California, popularized the phrase “4:20” to refer to a scheme to look for a cannabis crop that had been abandoned using a treasure map created by the farmer as a guide.
The five students—Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich—designated the Louis Pasteur statue[14] on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place and 4:20 pm as their meeting time. They dubbed themselves the Waldos because their go-to hangout spot “was a wall outside the school.”
The expression “4:20 Louis” was used by the Waldos to describe this strategy. The gang subsequently simplified their statement to “4:20,” which later developed into a codeword the teenagers used to allude to ingesting cannabis, after repeated unsuccessful efforts to locate the crop.
