The Titans emerged 100 years ago and wiped out the majority of mankind. Humanity erected a series of barriers to halt them and continued to dwell in peace. Eren confesses his wish to escape the constraints of the Outer Wall and explore the outside world to his pals Armin and Mikasa in the modern settlement of Monzen. Following an unsuccessful effort to scale the wall, Souda, the Garrison’s captain, informs them that the military is forming a reconnaissance unit to investigate beyond the walls. The Colossal Titan, however, attacks the wall unexpectedly. The village’s defenses are penetrated, and Titans arrive, devouring people and regenerating when damaged. Mikasa is separated from Eren and assumed dead when she attempts to save a newborn.

Eren and Armin, along with Sasha, Jean, and others, join the Scout Regiment two years later. Military Police Commander Kubal leads the troops out into one of the Outer Wall’s communities. The Scouts are then assaulted by Titans, but Captain Shikishima and Mikasa, who survived the incident two years earlier and is now a member of the Scouts, rescue the group. Mikasa refuses to speak to Eren, behaving as if he is a complete stranger. Mikasa ultimately confronts Eren, and she tells him that the experience has taught her that the world is harsh. Eren is upset once again after learning that Mikasa and Shikishima are most likely together.

When additional Titans appear, Kubal flees, leaving the Scouts to their own devices. Lil, who had just lost her partner, makes the ultimate sacrifice. Jean tries to persuade Eren to run, but Eren decides to fight back rather than risk losing his leg. Eren saves Armin from being devoured, but only at the expense of his own life. Despite being heartbroken by Eren’s death, Mikasa battles until she runs out of fuel and runs into the Titan that devoured Eren. However, a Titan rises from inside it, and the other Titans are pitted against it. Souda and Mikasa recognize Eren as the Titan. Mikasa frees Eren from his Titan shell when he begins to collapse.
