The manga really began seven years before the anime premiered

“Attack on Titan” has grown into a massive franchise with fans all around the globe. It’s hard to imagine that the massively popular series, created by writer and artist Hajime Isayama, began as a one-shot manga in 2006. At the age of 19, Isayama’s 65-page narrative won him his first win, the Magazine Grand Prix’s Fine Work award.

It wasn’t until three or four years later that Isayama’s editor proposed resurrecting the title and turning it into a regular series. Taking the concept and running with it, it took him a half-year to iron out the intricacies that would transform “Attack on Titan” into a megahit manga and anime.
