How the Houston Astros obtained their name

The Houston Astros have been in existence since October 17, 1960, although they were not always known as the ‘Stros. For the first three years of the franchise’s existence, the Astros were known as the Houston Colt.45s.

It wasn’t until December 1964 that the club’s owner, Roy Hofheinz, chose to rename the team the Houston Astros. Hofheinz intended to name them Houston Astronauts, a homage to the heroes of the day AND because Houston was the space metropolis. He did, however, abbreviate the name to Astros so that sports journalists would not shorten it for him. The team’s relocation to the Astrodome coincided with the name change.

Another reason for the name change was that Cold 45 was under the hands of the Colt Firearms Company. Colt Firearms had agreed to let Hofheinz use the Colt name and picture on the team’s baseball shirts. When the team began playing in the Astrodome, the Colt corporation sought to benefit from apparel sales. Hofheinz did not like it, so he renamed the squad the Astros instead of the Colt.45s.
