Berserk is a Japanese manga series written and drawn by Kentaro Miura. Set in a dark fantasy setting inspired by medieval Europe, the tale revolves around the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the captain of a mercenary band known as the “Band of the Hawk.” Miura debuted a prototype of Berserk in 1988. The series debuted the next year in Hakusensha’s now-defunct magazine Monthly Animal House, which was superseded in 1992 by the semimonthly magazine Young Animal, where Berserk has been published irregularly since. Following Miura’s death in May 2021, the last chapter he authored and painted was released posthumously. The series will resume publishing in June 2022, under the supervision of Miura’s colleague manga artist and boyhood buddy Kouji Mori, as well as Miura’s group of Studio Gaga helpers and apprentices.

Berserk was adapted into a 25-episode anime television series by OLM, which covers the Golden Age narrative arc and aired from October 1997 to March 1998. The Golden Age arc was also translated as a trilogy of theatrical anime films, the first two of which debuted in 2012 and the third in 2013. A second 24-episode anime television series adaptation aired for two seasons in 2016 and 2017.
