Who is Billy Hargrove?
William “Billy” Hargrove, played by Dacre Montgomery, was a key character and antagonist in Stranger Things. He was introduced in the second season and became the primary antagonist in the third.
Billy is a ‘Bad Boy’ with scary, violent overtones. He presents himself as attractive, alluring, and the new King of Hawkins High. His father’s maltreatment made him angry and unstable. Billy only shows his aggression to people closest to him, particularly those he can beat in a fight. He views Steve as an opponent to defeat.
His aggression towards Lucas suggests racism. First time he sees Lucas, he and Max had a fight that left Max clearly unhappy. Due of his father’s brutality against him and his mother, he may have imagined Lucas was like Neil Hargrove. He advises Max to avoid Lucas, then strikes Lucas for being near Max. Ironically, his aggressive, harsh, nasty efforts at protection are like his father’s.
He drives a blue Camaro and is a drinking-game expert, becoming Hawkins’ keg king. Billy is popular but has no significant relationships. Billy’s violent father caused his mother to leave him with Neil, who now calls him a ‘faggot’ Susan witnesses Billy’s assault but does nothing to defend him, despite his bravado.
