William J. Le Petomane Thruway

Le Petomane Thruway is a homage in Mel Brook’s Blazing Saddles to the French Fartise. In Blazing Saddles, to avoid quicksand in the American frontier of 1874, a new railroad under construction will have to be diverted via the settlement of Rock Ridge. Conniving territorial attorney general Hedley Lamarr wants to compel Rock Ridge’s citizens to flee their town, so he sends a group of thugs, led by his flunky Taggart, to kill the sheriff and ruin the town. The inhabitants of the town demand that Governor William J. Le Petomane appoints a new sheriff to protect them. Lamarr persuades Le Petomane, a dimwitted train worker due to being hanged for attacking Taggart, to nominate Bart. Lamarr believes that a black sheriff would upset the townsfolk, cause disorder, and leave Rock Ridge at his mercy.
