What is the plot of the Carnival of Souls?

Carnival of Souls (Herk Harvey, 1962) is an odd, atmospheric, and memorable low-budget horror film. The story revolves around Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss), a young church organist who is plagued by images of a macabre netherworld after escaping what looks to be certain death when a vehicle in which she is a passenger plunges over the side of a bridge into the river below.

Despite being amateurish in many aspects (the film has some awkward acting, terrible lip-synching, clumsy editing, and a few continuity issues), Carnival of Souls continues to captivate many spectators. Carnival of Souls is not your typical horror or ghost tale; instead, it delves into Mary Henry’s psychological condition as she emerges, seemingly unscathed, from the dark depths of the river. Furthermore, Carnival of Souls presents a variety of confusing issues about Mary Henry’s existence without offering definite solutions. Is Mary truly alive after what looks to be a definite death? Is she dead already? Is she in the actual world or a parallel universe? One reasonable reading of Carnival of Souls is that it depicts a hallucinating dream – or nightmare – that Mary is having in the split second before the automobile crashes into the river and she falls to her death.
