Tyrannosaurus is a North American theropod dinosaur genus. Tyrannosaurus rex (‘rex’ means ‘king’ in Latin), commonly abbreviated to T. rex (or incorrectly T-Rex), is a fixture in popular culture around the world, and has been extensively used in scientific television and movies such as documentaries and Jurassic Park, as well as children’s series such as The Land Before Time. Tyrannosaurus roamed much more of what is now western North America than other tyrannosaurids. T. rex fossils have been discovered in a range of rock formations going back to the final two million years of the Cretaceous Period, between 68 and 66 million years ago; it was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs to live before the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event.

Tyrannosaurus, like other tyrannosaurids, was a bipedal carnivore with a huge cranium balanced by a long, hefty tail. Tyrannosaurus forelimbs were diminutive in comparison to the massive and muscular hindlimbs, but extraordinarily powerful for their size, having two major digits and a probable third vestigial digit. T. rex was the biggest known tyrannosaurid and one of the largest known terrestrial carnivores, reaching up to 12.3 meters (40 ft.) in length, 4 meters (13 ft.) tall at the hips, and 6.8 metric tons (7.5 short tons) in weight. T. rex, by far the biggest carnivore in its habitat, might have been an apex predator, hunting hadrosaurs and ceratopsians. Although some scientists believe it was largely a scavenger, this has been a hotly debated idea in recent years.
