THE REAL NAME OF GOKU
Gohan was not Goku’s real grandfather, but he did adopt him after discovering him as a child in the woods. Grandpa Gohan, in fact, gave Goku his Earth name. On Planet Vegeta, Goku was known as Kakarot, a name derived from the word “carrot,” in line with the pattern of Saiyan names derived from vegetables. Of course, when Goku was brought to Earth and discovered by Gohan, he was too young to remember his Saiyan name.
When Gohan came upon the monkey-tailed child, he named him Goku, after the major inspiration for the original Dragon Ball series, Journey to the West. Sun Wukong, whose name translates to Son Goku in Japanese Kanji, is the protagonist of the famous narrative. Toriyama gave Goku this moniker because he was based on the Monkey King.
This would all come full circle when Goku named his kid after his grandfather, a fitting homage to the man who had adopted, reared, trained him to fight, and given him an Earth name.
