Akira Toriyama created the Dragon Ball manga. The 519 chapters were first published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from 1984 to 1995. The series has spawned animated and live-action films, trading card games, action figures, music, and video games. Viz Media licensed the series for North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Companies separated the manga into Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z to mirror the anime, but the last volume was issued under its original title.

Its tankobon volumes have around 160 million copies in Japan and 300 million globally, making it the second or third best-selling manga series.
