What is the meaning of ED-209?

The ED-209 (pronounced Ed Two Oh Nine), Enforcement Droid Series 209, is a highly armed robot. Due to its lack of intellect and proclivity for clumsy malfunctions, it acts as a foil for RoboCop as well as a source of comedic relief. For example, during a boardroom demonstration of ED-209’s “disarm and arrest” method using a board executive named Kinney as the test subject, ED-209 fails to identify that Kinney has dropped his weapon and blasts him to death in an over-the-top way with its automatic cannons. Later, it is shown that ED-209 is unable to ascend or descend stairs when attempting to pursue RoboCop.

The ED-209 appears in every major RoboCop film, however, it is absent from the series’ direct-to-video releases and television series (although an ED with a different model number is present).
