What is the significance of Eeyore’s name?

Eeyore is a fictitious character in A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories. He is a pessimistic, gloomy, unhappy, anhedonic, elderly grey plush donkey who is a buddy of the titular character, Winnie-the-Pooh.

Eeyore appears in Winnie-the-Pooh chapters 4, 6, 7, and 10, and is referenced in a few more. Except for Chapter 7, he appears in every chapter of The House at Pooh Corner. The spelling with a “r” is explained by the fact that Milne and the majority of his intended audience spoke a non-rhotic variation of English in which the “r” in “Eeyore” is not pronounced as /r/.
