Why did Back to the Future choose 88 mph?

The DeLorean is a step up for White, who was previously driving a 2001 Volvo with 300,000 miles. White, a graduate student at the California Institute of the Arts studying sound design and music, had been saving for the sports automobile for four years.

White fell in love with the DeLorean after seeing it in Robert Zemeckis’ famous film Back to the Future in 1986. Dr. Emmett Brown informs Marty McFly in it that driving at 88 mph would ignite the vehicle’s flux capacitor and transport them to another dimension. “It’s some kind of magic number,” White said.

He discovered a vendor after doing some research: a 70-year-old guy who had just refurbished a DeLorean that had been languishing in a barn in Georgia for years. White wouldn’t say how much he spent for the DeLorean, but he did say it was “more than I can afford.” A DeLorean can achieve speeds of up to 150 mph, but White claimed his car was “absolutely content” at 88 mph.

Although the genuine John DeLorean sports vehicle lacks the bells and whistles introduced by Doc Brown in the famous movie, White’s DeLorean did come with a fake flux capacitor fitted by a former owner. However, since the DeLorean is White’s lone vehicle, he removed the prop to create a place for essentials such as groceries.
