Is Ash killed in Evil Dead 2?

As every Evil Dead fan has no doubt memorized after several viewings, Sam Raimi’s original film does not end well for Ash. While Ash defeats his possessed pals via physical dismemberment, the closing scene is from the perspective of a terrible demonic entity rising from the woods to fling itself one last time at a screaming Ash. While Evil Dead 2 follows up with the revelation that Ash was briefly possessed before snapping back to reality, this was a retcon.

When it comes to Ash’s destiny, the finale of The Evil Dead is rather vague, although Raimi and crew have said that their initial focus was for the demonic entity’s last strike to result in Ash’s death. Raimi and Campbell had no intention of making an Evil Dead sequel at the time, which contributed to the infamous question of whether Evil Dead 2 was a sequel or a remake, because they had quickly sold off the rights to The Evil Dead after its release, and thus couldn’t reuse footage from their own film to recap the plot at the start of Evil Dead 2. Fortunately, they retained control of the plot and characters, permitting Ash’s previously unplanned comeback.
