Who is Figment Dragon ?
Baxter named Figment John Hillerman created the word “figment” after seeing an episode of Magnum, P.I. in which a goat ate Higgins’ flowers. Figments don’t eat exotic flowers.
Journey Into Imagination opened October 1, 1982, but the dark ride launched March 5, 1983. Dreamfinder tells Figment to use his imagination in the initial attraction. Figment is “imaginary” Dreamfinder found two little wings, huge yellow eyes, steer horns (or problems, according to a 1983 Today Show interview), and a crocodile’s snout. “One Little Spark” explains Figment (by the Sherman Brothers). Dreamfinder: “Two little wings, golden eyes, steer-like horns, and gorgeous. Figment’s head-to-tail red.”
Figment is a superhero, cowboy, knight, skunk, dancer, mountain climber, and pirate. In the original and contemporary attractions, he wears a spacesuit and wishes to be an astronaut. “I’m an astronaut wish tobe. Creativity helps me discover new things.” Figment is typically marketed with a spacesuit.
Dreamfinder and Figment were deleted from Journey Into Imagination in 1999. In Journey Into Your Imagination, Eric Idle’s Dr. Nigel Channing visited the Imagination Institute. Channing started in a 3-D movie nearby.
In the current edition, Figment’s imagination changes a scent emitting machine into a slot machine, flips his house upside down, and rearranges an eye chart in the climax. At the beginning, he may make Dr. Channing glasses and a skunk costume in the Smell Lab.
After a Disney investor asked CEO Michael Eisner about Figment’s absence at the annual shareholders meeting, the dragon was added to the Imagination Institute tour in 2002. Figment’s new title was Journey Into Imagination.
Billy Barty voiced Figment in the first attraction, Corey Burton in the middle version, and Muppeteer Dave Goelz now.
Figment appeared in 1980s Disney instructional shorts, including Peter Pan and Alice from Alice in Wonderland (both portrayed by live-action performers), and as a painting in Inside Out and Toy Story 4. Disney and Marvel released Disney Kingdoms: Figment in 2014 and Figment 2 in 2015. Figment appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout. Collectible Disney California Adventure dark ride.
