What exactly happens in the movie “Fletch”?

Irwin M. “Fletch” Fletcher, an undercover writer for the Los Angeles Times who writes under the alias “Jane Doe,” is now working on a story that will expose drug trafficking on the beaches of Los Angeles. While acting the part of a junkie, he is contacted by the executive vice president of Boyd Aviation, Alan Stanwyk, who is under the impression that Fletch is a genuine addict. Stanwyk asserts that he is suffering from bone cancer, has just a few months left to live, and wants to end his life as soon as possible. Stanwyk offers Fletch a reward of $50,000 in exchange for killing him at his mansion within the next few days, acting as though the murder was the result of a burglary, and then escaping to Rio de Janeiro.
