Gnome Pumpkin Season Fall Thanksgiving Family
A gnome is a legendary creature and miniature spirit in Renaissance magic and alchemy, initially created by Paracelsus in the 16th century and subsequently embraced by contemporary fantasy writers. Its traits have been rewritten to fit the purposes of different storytellers, but it is usually described as a little humanoid that dwells underground. Garden gnomes are little sculptures of gnomes that were introduced as lawn decorations in the nineteenth century and rose in popularity throughout the twentieth century.
The phrase may be an original creation of Paracelsus, probably derived from Latin gēnomo. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to the omission of the ē as a mistake in this circumstance (OED). Gnomi is a synonym for Pygmaei in Paracelsus’ classification of earth elementals. He portrays them as two spans tall, wary of people, and capable of moving through solid soil as effortlessly as humans travel through air.
The chthonic or earth-dwelling spirit appears in several ancient and medieval myths, often protecting mines and valuable subterranean riches, most notably in the Germanic dwarfs and the Greek Chalybes, Telchines, or Dactyls. This template is followed by the gnomes of Swiss folklore, who are said to have caused the landslide that destroyed the Swiss village of Plurs in 1618 – the villagers had become wealthy from a local gold mine created by the gnomes, who poured liquid gold down into a vein for the benefit of humans and were corrupted by their newfound prosperity, which greatly offended the gnomes.
