Is Carnival of Souls terrifying?

It was created by a tiny group of industrial filmmakers from Lawrence, Kansas, directed by director Herk Harvey, and it first appeared in the obscurity of the B-movie exploitation circuit. But then it was found on television throughout the years, and there’s a specific reason for that, in my opinion: Carnival of Souls may be the greatest horror picture to watch late at night on TV. It’s more than simply frightening; it’s weird, with a 3-a.m. loneliness that you tap into like a private dream.

The film’s stilted expressionistic no-budget mood is unique — think Ingmar Bergman meets Ed Wood. Is that a frightening demon-dude in the picture above? He’s the ghost/stalker — the visage of dread — who keeps appearing to terrorize Mary (Candace Hilligoss), the heroine who escapes from a vehicle that has gone over a bridge and into the river below following a drag race. She lives, but it’s her destiny to be bothered by this person (played by the film’s director; clearly, he recognized a nice face when he saw one).
