In an interview with Vulture, director Wes Craven claimed that the storyline of A Nightmare on Elm Street was inspired by an article he read in the Los Angeles Times. It was about a family that survived the Cambodian Killing Fields and made their way to the United States of America. He reported that everything was good for them, but then their small boy began experiencing really scary dreams. The child informed his parents that he was terrified that if he slept, the creature hunting him would get him, so he attempted to remain up for days at a time.
