‘Stranger Things’: Is Hawkins, Indiana a Real Place?

Many Stranger Things viewers may visit the locations where their favorite show’s young stars were shot. Even though Hawkins is purported to be located in Indiana, Stranger Things was shot in Georgia.

Because Georgia provides tax benefits and other incentives to those making movies and television series in the state, Stranger Things creators the Duffer brothers opted to locate the production in Georgia.

When filming Stranger Things, some of the buildings and locations used include Bradley’s Big Buy Grocery Store, Emory University’s Briarcliff Campus, Gwinnet Place Mall, better known as Starcourt Mall, South Bend Pool, which serves as Hawkins Community Pool, and Stone Mountain Park – which is seen in several of the scenes – as well as other locations around Atlanta. Jackson, a hamlet south of Atlanta, serves as the town’s downtown, and a number of local businesses have cashed on the show’s success by inventing unique menu items and picture ops for visitors.
