Hawkins’s History will supprise you.
Before 1983, Hawkins was quiet. Final missing person in 1923, last suicide in 1961. Hawkins National Laboratory was the most interesting of six national laboratories built after WWII. The lab helped MKUltra, unbeknownst to locals.
During lab experiments in November 1983, a portal to another dimension opened, bringing a ravenous creature into Hawkins. It brought people to the Upside Down. Will Byers and Barbara Holland were killed after a week away. Hawkins Lab employees concealed their absence.
Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers emailed Murray Bauman Sam Owens’ 1984 confession. Bauman framed Barbara Holland’s death on a lab accident to keep the Upside Down a secret, believing the public wouldn’t believe it and the evidence could be destroyed. Eleven closed the Upside Down’s portal, releasing Will.
Hawkins Mayor Larry Kline acquired Starcourt Mall property in East Hawkins. Several downtown Hawkins establishments and companies left when the mall opened in 1985, causing animosity between the mayor and locals. Starcourt offered businesses and restaurants, which Hawkins residents enjoyed. Starcourt Mall contained a Russian station that led to the Upside Down. Dustin Henderson located the site after intercepting Russian transmissions with his ham radio. They almost escaped.
